Endocarditis caused by Aspergillus species in injection drug users.

Aspergillus endocarditis is a rare event; a very few cases have been reported in injection drug users (IDUs) and patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We report 2 proven cases and 1 highly suggestive case of Aspergillus endocarditis in IDUs, 2 of whom were infected with HIV, and discuss some related clinical and pathogenic aspects.

Aortic valve endocarditis possibly caused by a Haematobacter-like species.

Haematobacter is a newly proposed genus for a group of fastidious Gram-negative aerobic bacilli isolated mostly from blood samples from patients with septicemia. The Haematobacter genus currently includes two species, H. massiliensis and H. missouriensis. We report isolation of a novel Haematobacter-like species from the blood of a 65-year-old man who suffered from probable aortic valve endocar...

Endocarditis caused by Capnocytophaga ochracea.

Capnocytophaga ochracea is a gram-negative, fusiform bacillus which is part of the normal human oral flora. This organism is often isolated from periodontal lesions of patients with periodontitis and is associated with sepsis in granulocytopenic patients. We report here a case of endocarditis caused by C. ochracea.

Endocarditis caused by Rhodotorula infection.

Rhodotorula is an emerging opportunistic fungal pathogen that is rarely reported to cause endocarditis. We describe a case involving a patient who developed endocarditis due to Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Staphylococcus epidermidis, proven by culture and histopathology. The case illustrates the unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges relevant to Rhodotorula spp.

Endocarditis caused by Rothia dentocariosa.

A case of infective endocarditis caused by Rothia dentocariosa is described in a 53 year old man with a history of rheumatic fever. R dentocariosa is a component of the oral microbiota and has only rarely and recently been recognised as a human pathogen. In this patient the oral flora was the probable source of infection, with a broken molar tooth providing the probable avenue for infection.
